Your eyes allow you to see the world in all of its glory. They need to be taken care of and given due attention. For this reason, it is important to have regular eye exams just like you would a health exam. They do not take very long and can give great benefits. Here are some important facts to know about eye exams.
When and Why You Need One
Eye exams are recommended starting at age three. This first exam will be to check that the development of the eye is on track and that there are no hidden problems. After this first exam, it is recommended to have an eye exam every two years. Regular eye exams will check for any developing problems or illnesses in your eyes. It is important that you keep up with the eye exams as many of the problems that can be caused in your eyes are not visually noticeable until extensive damage to your vision has been done. Another reason to schedule an eye exam would be any changes noticed in vision, such as not seeing clearly. Catching problems early is the key to maintaining healthy eyesight in the future.
What They Will Do
Most eye exams will consist of several different tests. One such test will be an internal exam where a machine will be used to check the veins in your eyes. This will also take a photo of the inside of your eye for future visits. The photograph will be compared with previous photos to check for any changes that need to be addressed. Other tests performed will tell the optometrist how well you see at a distance and close up. They will also check your depth perception and ability to see colours. All of these different tests will be compiled to tell the doctor the overall health of your eyes. This will let them know whether you are in need of glasses or some cases surgery.
Glasses or Contacts
If the optometrist decides that you are in need of enhancements to your vision, you will be prescribed glasses. You will be allowed to choose the frames you want, and your lens will be made to fit your needs. In some cases, you may be able to choose contacts instead of glasses. Contacts are preferred by many for the convenience of not having something they need to keep track of. Contacts are available in many different styles from one day wear to newer versions that can be worn for longer periods of time. You will want to speak with your optometrist about the best fit for you and your eyes.
Routine eye exams will help you maintain your vision and keep you seeing the best in the world. Taking vision tests every other year can give you healthy eyes for years to come.
