Sexual Health Clinic: Top Diseases to Be Wary Of

Posted on: 24 April 2017

Having to deal with a sexually transmitted disease is something that will make most people feel alarmed and uncomfortable. Not only would you have to engage in awkward conversations with your sexual partner, but you would also have to contend with the cost of seeking treatment. As such, some people simply tend to ignore their sexual health, assuming that if they do not think about it, they do not have to worry about it. The reality of the matter is that sexually transmitted diseases can become fatal if you do not have them diagnosed and treated promptly. That is why it is prudent for everyone who is sexually active to have a routine checkup to ensure that their reproductive system is in good health. Below are a few of the top diseases that can be dangerous if left untreated.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is one of the more common STDs that you could contract, as its infection rate is high. However, since chlamydia does not present with many symptoms, it can easily be overlooked, giving it time to get worse. Chlamydia symptoms in women will typically manifest as a strange vaginal discharge that could be accompanied by pain during urination. Men, on the other hand, rarely develop any symptoms, so they can stay infected for a long time without having a clue unless they get a sexual health checkup. If the chlamydia is not treated, women are at risk of becoming barren, as it will affect the fallopian tubes as well as the uterus.

Gonorrhoea

This type of sexually transmitted disease does not only affect the sexual organs. It can also cause throat and rectal infections. However, it is also one of the hardest sexually transmitted infections to diagnose without a thorough health checkup as you could easily miss its symptoms. In men, gonorrhoea will typically manifest as a strange yellow or whitish discharge from the penis. Some men may even experience discomfort when urinating, which could go away over time. Women, on the other hand, may stay asymptomatic the entire time they are infected. If gonorrhea has caused a rectal infection, it will be accompanied with heightened itching sensations, which could lead to sores on the anus.

Gonorrhoea is a serious STD because although you may not have any noticeable symptoms, the disease will be wreaking havoc to your internal organs. Women should be especially wary, as the disease could obstruct their fallopian tubes, increasing the risk of an ectopic pregnancy. In men, undetected gonorrhoea can make them sterile, as it will damage their testicles. Luckily, gonorrhoea can easily be treated with a course of antibiotics, but you would have to detect it early enough for treatment to be effective.
